Chinese New Year 2020: Movies to catch on Apple TV

Flush with angbaos this Chinese New Year? Homebound and looking for something to watch? You might want to check out these titles on Apple TV. From 24th to the 31st of January, you can enjoy a cinematic experience with a local flair at irresistible prices (SGD$4.98/RM12.90)!

1. That Girl in Pinafore (2013), dir Chai Yee Wei

That Girl in Pinafore (2013) is a coming of age film set in 1993, and is the first Singapore film in 15 years to celebrate the success of xinyao – the popular ‘90s Singaporean-Mandarin folk music movement.

Starring Daren Tan and Julie Tan who play Jiaming and May respectively, the film follows four teenagers’ efforts to bring business back to a struggling folk music pub, and the blossoming love between Jiaming and May, both fans of Singaporean folk music.

2. Mr Unbelievable (2015), dir Ong Kuo Sin

What started from a music video to promote a tv sitcom, snowballed into a viral hit which got 3 million views on YouTube and Facebook. Mr Unbelievable is about Eric Kwek (Chan Tian Wen), a man who was born on the same day as Singapore and was found abandoned as a baby with a broccoli by his side. After being taken in by Master Lo Man, Lo Man trains Eric to perform in the getai industry, although his looks have caused some setbacks. When Lo Man’s getai business worsens,  Eric, hoping to make it big, starts incorporating English words into Hokkien songs.

3. Lucky Boy (2017), dir Boris Boo

Lucky Boy tells the tale of Lin Yu, who has never been favoured by luck. After a fortune teller predicts that he will live a life of continuous misfortune, he is advised to lay low and not stand out. However, his feelings for his childhood crush, Qing Qing, motivates him to change his fate. Starring Ah Boys To Men star, Wang Weiliang and veteran actor Chew Chor Meng.

4. Ilo Ilo (2013), dir Anthony Chen

The first Singaporean film to win the Camera d’Or prize at the Cannes Film Festival, Ilo Ilo is a drama about an ordinary middle-class family in Singapore. Set in the 1990s during the Asian Financial Crisis, the story depicts the difficulties of the Lim family, who have a 10-year-old son and another child on the way. To relieve their burden, they hire a helper who forms an unexpected bond with their son. Starring veterans Yeo Yann Yan and Chen Tianwen, the film is packed with a star studded cast along with newcomer Koh Jia Ler who plays Jia Le.

5. Gone Shopping (2007), dir Wee Li Lin

Gone Shopping revolves around three stories, all set in Singapore’s shopping centres. An intertwined tale of Clara, a ‘Tai Tai’ who comes across her past lover while window shopping; an 8 year old girl abandoned by her parents at Mustafa department store; and a cosplaying young man that wanders in shopping centres looking for company. Starring Kym Ng as Clara and Adrian Pang as Valentine Tan, the film leads us through a journey of love, loss and lunacy through the heart of Singapore, the land of shopping malls.
